Our elderly chocolate lab, Gigi, went to Rainbow Bridge this morning after declining rapidly over the weekend. Her health had been declining for some time and arthritis had made it so difficult for her to get around that she spent most of her time on her dog bed. She came to us as a stray who, we and the vet thought, had probably been a backyard breeder and she was so skinny and her ears so fly-bitten that she still bore scars all these years later. Maybe if those people had taken better care of her, she wouldn't have suffered from the ravages of old age so early. Our best guess was that she was around 13 or 14.

I'm so sorry to read this. You sound like me in that you rarely get the back story on your critters.

That's true. I have no history on Clyde, Rocky, or Johnny, only a sketchy history on Jade, Freddie was at a bird fair, Benjy was from a pet store, and Ringo is the only one I really know anything about, as she was only 3 weeks old when she moved in with us. Jack was born in the home of the people we got him from and he was not kindly treated there, but at least we're only his second home and he was still young when he came to us. That's what happens when you take in rescue critters.

So sorry about Gigi. I have no doubt you did all you could to make up for whatever may have happened in her previous home, and gave her a good life.

Hi Siobhan, I'm sorry to hear about Gigi...at least with you she had the best home one could ever want. I'm sure she knew that.
